17 Reasons why every Christian is (a little bit) Irish

1. Saint Patrick is the most commonly recognized Christian (saint) of Ireland

2. Saint Patrick received a dream of ‘direction’ from God, followed the directions and introduced an entire nation to Christianity

3. Everyone loves a parade!

4. Saint Patrick used the shamrock to explain the Trinity to pre-Christian Irishmen

5. Saint Patrick was born wealthy and CHOSE to follow God!

6. By the end of winter, everyone is ready to ‘wear a little green’

7. Saint Patrick’s Day is never celebrated during Holy Week– in 2008, it was celebrated on March 15th so that it wouldn’t interfere with the most important Christian celebration there is– EASTER!!!

8. Amazing Grace sounds really great when coupled with Celtic accompaniment

9. Everyone sounds better with an Irish accent

10. In Ireland, Saint Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday– the rest of the world would do well to follow suit

11. Saint Patrick witnessed to the poor and wealthy, alike

12. Saint Patrick’s Day is the perfect excuse to wear plaid

13. Saint Patrick returned to a land where he had seen captivity to spread the Gospel of Christ

14. Irish people are always affectionate (Kiss me, I’m Irish)!

15. Everyone is striving to be ‘green’ these days :)

16. The world would be a much better place if we all witnessed with the fervor Saint Patrick did!

17. Actual Irish lineage isn’t important because Saint Patrick wasn’t even Irish!!!!

A new calling?

I love pictures. To me, they are more than images laid onto paper. They are memories of a moment captured forever. I love to scrapbook. I love to dig into genealogy… Lately, I’m wondering if God is calling me to do something with this great love… The following are some of the photos I have manipulated… I have posted other blogs with pictures, too, if you visit my January entries, I think you will find them there… I am looking for feedback on my work, please let me know what you think. Would anyone pay me to manipulate their photos– not to take the place of professional portraits, but to enhance snapshots captured in a heartbeat, never to be forgotten? Thoughts?

Mariah

Some months ago, I posted blogs about my boys… well, I’m a little behind where I wanted to be, but this is Mariah’s entry.

Brand-new Mariah

All those saying about little girls– sugar and spices, petticoats and lace, curls and big eyes– culminate in my little girl. Mariah is quiet, shy, sweet, thoughtful, helpful, girlie, and the list goes on! After having two boys, I was convinced Mariah was a boy during my entire pregnancy. When I had a sonogram at 20 weeks, we attempted to learn the gender of our third child, but it was no use– the baby was content to lounge about in Mommy’s tummy with its legs crossed! The baby cared not one bit that its Mommy desperately wanted to know whether to go shopping for a blue crib set or a pink one! In fact, I even questioned the doctor in the delivery room after she announced ‘It’s a girl!’ :D

My goofy girl!

Well, it was a girl, and it didn’t take long for Mariah to have her Daddy, Mommy and pretty much anyone else who came near wrapped around her little finger! She was a petite baby with a tiny mouth (which I foresee costing many dollars in dental work in the future) and a quiet cry. She was an unassuming baby and happy as could be. We did have some scares and frustrations with Baby Mariah as she struggled with respiratory issues and ear infections her first year of life. I forgot to mention, Mariah was born less than a week before Christmas and, therefore, dubbed our ‘Christmas Angel’.

Frosting Face!!!

As Mariah grew, she became a real charmer and everyone, it seems, fell in love with her curly, curly hair. She was walking/running at a year to keep up with those big brothers and talking just as quickly– she had to tattle on them, too! ;) Mariah developed her love of sparkles and lace at an early age– she is definitely a girlie-girl! Her love of babies was evident early on, too, and Mariah was delighted when she became a big sister at less than two years of age!

The proud big sister!

My curly girl!

At a big girl of two, Mariah rattled off her alphabet, colors and shapes, leaving Mommy wondering what she was supposed to teach her precious little girl! By the time Mariah arrived at three, she was ready to go to school, but, alas, she was forced to wait until the following September. She passed the many months between her third birthday and that first day of school by being Mommy’s helper. Mariah loves to help cook and clean house. She ‘reads’ to the younger kids and is, quite frankly, a second Mommy in our home!

Now, Mariah is a bubbly pre-schooler at Faith Academy in our church. She has– already– mastered the curriculum to go to Kindergarten, BUT she must wait another year. Now, she memorizes entire story books and is starting to sound out words, again leaving me to wonder if Kindergarten will hold any challenges by the time she gets there– it’s a little exasperating! :)

This blog would be remiss if I didn’t mention Mariah’s complete and total love for animals– horses in particular. The other day she asked when we could move to the country so that we could have a horse… and a dog… and a cat…. and a– you get the point! I should also mention that Mariah is not perfect– I think I might have made her sound that way– not intentionally! She will be one of those children that drives her siblings crazy because she excels at everything she does… however, Mariah can be rather stubborn and does NOT like to be woken up! She is, perhaps, too timid at times and yet can scream like a banshee when she feels she’s been wronged! Mariah has a great love of music and can often be heard singing praise songs throughout the house– one Sunday morning, she came out of her room and said, “Did you her me, Mommy? I’m singing for Jesus!!”

I’m very thankful for the curly-headed, sugar-and-spice, little-mommy, sweet-and-thoughtful princess with which God has blessed me.

where to begin???

I can’t believe it’s been so long since I have posted to my blog! To say the least, our family has had lots going on recently… so I’ll start with a recap of the last couple months.

Boy, has it been a long winter! The kids have wanted to go play in the snow– and often did– over the last several weeks, but some of the time it was just too cold! You know it has been a long winter when your nearly 8 year-old says, “I don’t want it to snow anymore! Isn’t is summer yet?” :) Thankfully, though, our family has had a very healthy winter and none of us have had to visit the doctor since I threw my back out right before Christmas… hallelujah!

So there are big changes in store for us this year. I’m leading a ‘Victoriously Frazzled’ Bible study for a group of ladies in our church– it is an absolutely fabulous series. Also, I’m attending the ‘Women of Moderation’ study being led by our pastor’s wife on Sunday mornings. I intend to FINALLY reach my weightloss goal this year!! So far I am down 9lbs. in 4 weeks– I am pretty excited! As a couple, Jason and I are attending Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. We’re very amped up about getting rid of our consumer debt and educating our children about the proper uses of money to ensure that they don’t have to go through the level of financial struggle we have been faced with for the last several years!

More highlights from our year so far include: Bridget graduating from Pull-ups; our sewer line needing to be dug up and repaired, and my attending of Women’s World in Manhattan a couple weeks ago.

In June, Jason and I will celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary! I really do wonder where the time has gone and marvel at how fiercely I love the man God made just for me!

I know the year has many other changes and challenges and blessings in store for us. I used to cling to the blessings, fear the challenges, and fight the changes, but in the time since Jason has launched his electronics business, I have learned to trust the Lord in ways I would have never guessed! And I cling to Romans 8:28 which tells us that God uses all things to work together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose– an awesome promise, to be sure! And that’s only the beginning…

Imperfections of the Woltje house– This one’s for Heather… :)

Noah and Kaden 124

I have to agree with Heather (VanHorn), fabulous mother of adorable twin girls– no family is perfect. Everybody has quirks, weaknesses, faults, and imperfections. In short, everyone is human. Here’s a little humanity… Woltje style. :)

**It took something like six months to potty-train Noah, and we ended up bribing him with a new football, a Chiefs jersey, and a kicking tee to get the job done!

**Today, Bridget scaled the front of her dresser to climb on top of Mariah’s top bunk!

**Mariah regularly tattles of people for an offense she has just committed, herself. :)

**Noah once pushed Kaden off the top bunk of their beds because Kaden wasn’t ’supposed’ to be up there… poor Kaden’s entire back was a rainbow of colors for a month!

**I have been known to use Veggietales as a baby-sitter… frequently. :D

**Common phrases heard at our house include… “Mom, he won’t play with me!” “Mommy, I don’t wanna sit by him!” “Mooo-om, I gotta go to the bathroom and she won’t let me in!!!”

**Occasionally, fruit snacks are an acceptable breakfast and ice cream is an acceptable supper.

**Last summer, Kaden streaked outside after a bath, whilst Dad and Mom were gone and Grandma was in charge… the neighbor across the street ordered him back indoors! :)

**Other common phrases… “Stop fussing with each other, please.” “I said to stop fussing” “If you don’t stop fussing, you can go to your room.” “Okay, enough fussing– I’m setting the timer and you can’t talk for 10 minutes! My ears hurt!!”

Regular occurrences… skinned-knees, runny noses, whining, tattling, crying, running in the house, chasing around the house, mis-matched clothing, stained clothing, missing clothing, lost clothing! Messy hair, sticky hands, sticky faces– sticky walls! Hugs, kisses, cuddles, snuggles….. :)
